Using Context to Determine Meaning
Some Word Knowledge questions place a word inside a sentence. Even if you do not know the word immediately, the rest of the sentence may give clues about its meaning. The goal is to use the sentence to narrow down the meaning of the target word.
Section 1
Look for Clues Around the Word
Read the entire sentence instead of focusing only on the unfamiliar word. Ask what is happening, whether the situation is positive or negative, what kind of meaning fits, and whether another part explains the word.
Definition, example, and general meaning clues
A sentence may define a word directly, give examples, or show its meaning through the overall situation. In "The terrain was barren, with almost no plants growing anywhere," the phrase "almost no plants growing" suggests barren means empty or unable to support growth. In "fragile objects, including thin glass ornaments and delicate plates," the examples suggest easily broken. After twelve hours without a break, a person who is exhausted is extremely tired.
Example 1
"The abandoned building was dilapidated, with broken windows, a leaking roof, and damaged walls." Dilapidated most nearly means: A. badly damaged | B. recently built | C. brightly decorated | D. completely empty
Solution
- 1Look at the clues after the word: broken windows, a leaking roof, and damaged walls.
- 2These details describe something in poor physical condition.
Why: Several examples of damage reveal the general meaning of dilapidated.
Example 2
"The instructions were concise, giving only the information needed to complete the task." Concise most nearly means: A. brief | B. confusing | C. repeated | D. emotional
Solution
- 1The instructions gave only the information needed.
- 2That means they were short and direct.
Why: The phrase after the word explains that unnecessary information was left out.
Example 3
"The child was reluctant to enter the dark room and remained near the doorway." Reluctant most nearly means: A. unwilling | B. excited | C. careless | D. unaware
Solution
- 1The child does not enter and stays near the doorway.
- 2That behavior suggests hesitation or unwillingness.
Why: The person's actions provide the clue to the unfamiliar word.
Section 2
Contrast & Tone Clues
Some sentences reveal meaning by showing an opposite idea. Contrast words such as but, however, although, yet, instead, and unlike can signal that relationship. Tone can also show whether a word is positive, negative, or neutral.
In "Unlike his talkative brother, Evan was reserved and rarely spoke," unlike signals contrast, so reserved likely means quiet or not very talkative. In "The manager praised Lena for her diligent work," praised suggests diligent is positive and helps eliminate negative choices such as lazy or careless.
Example 1
"Although the first plan was complicated, the revised plan was straightforward." Straightforward most nearly means: A. simple | B. dangerous | C. expensive | D. temporary
Solution
- 1Although signals contrast.
- 2The first plan was complicated, so the revised plan has the opposite quality.
Why: The sentence contrasts straightforward with complicated.
Example 2
"Unlike the hostile crowd outside, the people inside greeted the visitors warmly." Hostile most nearly means: A. unfriendly | B. patient | C. cheerful | D. curious
Solution
- 1The people inside greeted visitors warmly, suggesting friendliness.
- 2Hostile should suggest the opposite quality.
Why: The contrast between hostile and warmly reveals the meaning.
Example 3
"The supervisor commended Jordan for being meticulous and catching several small errors." Meticulous most nearly means: A. very careful | B. impatient | C. physically strong | D. easily distracted
Solution
- 1The supervisor commended Jordan.
- 2Catching several small errors shows careful attention to detail.
Why: The positive tone and the action of noticing small errors both point toward carefulness.
Section 3
Use Context to Eliminate Answer Choices
You do not always need the exact dictionary definition. Read the full sentence, form a rough meaning, look at the choices, remove choices that do not fit, and select the closest remaining meaning. If the sentence strongly supports one answer, do not reject it because you cannot state a perfect definition.
Example 1
"The witness gave a vague description and could not remember many specific details." Vague most nearly means: A. unclear | B. accurate | C. lengthy | D. angry
Solution
- 1The witness could not remember many specific details.
- 2The description therefore lacked clarity.
Why: The sentence directly indicates that the description was not specific.
Example 2
"Despite the difficult conditions, the team remained resilient and continued working." Resilient most nearly means: A. able to recover and continue | B. unwilling to cooperate | C. easily frightened | D. poorly prepared
Solution
- 1The conditions were difficult, but the team continued working.
- 2The word describes the ability to keep going despite difficulty.
Why: The team's behavior shows persistence despite hardship.
Example 3
"The temporary shelter was adequate for one night, but it would not be comfortable for a long stay." Adequate most nearly means: A. sufficient | B. luxurious | C. dangerous | D. permanent
Solution
- 1The shelter is good enough for one night but not ideal for a long stay.
- 2That suggests good enough or sufficient.
Why: The shelter meets the basic need without being especially good.
